Spirulina Smoothie

Looks can be deceiving; don’t let the hue deter you! This baby is a total nutrient powerhouse. Spirulina makes its way deep into your vital organs, giving them a good ol’ sweep. If you’re dealing with chronic health issues (any!) this is the thing you’ve been looking for. It’s my spin on the Medical Medium heavy metal detox smoothie, a much tastier version in my opinion.

Keep in mind that it’s vital that the spirulina, cilantro, dulse and barley grass juice powder all make it into the smoothie – as they work in conjunction. That’s the magic.

In order to let all the nutrients do their thing, you really want to keep out any sort of protein powders or fats (even nut butters…). I know, I know. Toppings. You won’t go back once you try out some bee pollen & sliced up banana - perfect balance of sweet & crunchy.

If you want to make this drinkable so you can take it on-the-go, just add more water. Personally, I love to keep it on the thicker side & go for the toppings. It feels more decadent & filling to me. Enjoy! Happy healing.

Recipe:

  • 2 bananas (bright yellow, light spotting for optimum digestion)

  • 1 1/2 c frozen wild blueberries (available at Trader Joe’s)

  • ¼ c frozen mango (also at TJ’s)

  • 1 tsp barley grass juice powder

  • 1 tsp spirulina

  • 3 tsp dulse flakes

  • 1 handful cilantro, about a cup (you can do a bit less if you’re sensitive to the taste but I do think it brightens up the flavor of the smoothie in a wonderful way)

  • 2+ c fresh baby spinach, pack it in! (you can also opt for frozen, but I really like to get the natural probiotics from the raw greens)

  • ¼ c filtered water (you can add more or less to get the desired thickness)

  • optional toppings: 1 tsp bee pollen, sliced banana

Place everything in a high speed blender in the order listed & blend on the frozen dessert setting if you have, using the tamp as needed. Top as desired!
